God is a person. Although He does not have a physical body, He has self-knowledge, will, intellect, self-determination, and emotions [love, joy, sorrow, etc.].

In short, God has His own unique, glorious, wonderful, altogether LOVELY *personality.*

[To read more about God's personality, and how you bear His image,

God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'" Ex 3.14

In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation concerning our sins.
1 John 4.10

I say to you that likewise joy shall be in Heaven over one sinner who repents, more than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.
Lk 15.7

You shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God
Ex 34.14

And the LORD had sorrow that He had made man on the earth, and He was angry to His heart.
Gen 6.6

He who sits in the heavens shall laugh.
Ps 2.4a
Unchanging
God is "immutable" -- that is, His values and His character never change.

[However, see the next following panel -- God can and does "repent."]
I am the LORD. I do not change. Mal 3.6a

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
Jam 1.17

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Heb 13.8

Although God is unchanging in nature, He is NOT impassible or unyielding. That is, God is not so unchangeable that He cannot be influenced by changes in YOUR attitudes and feelings and actions.

For example...

  • IF you turn AWAY from loving the world, and turn TO loving Jesus --
  • THEN God will turn AWAY from condemning you to hell, and turn TO saving you to eternal life.
  • In such a case, God didn't change His standards. Rather, you changed your status with respect to God's standards.
  • Also, if you pray in your capacity as a *priest* unto God [1 Pet 2.5, Rev 1.6] then He will answer.
Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it. John 3.10

[God said...] If that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I thought to bring upon it. Jer 18.8

The LORD repented that He had made man on the earth, and He was angry to His heart.
Gen 6.6

[Moses said...]
"Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now."
Then the LORD said: "I have pardoned, according to your word."
Num 14.19-20a

God is "outgoing."

  • God LOVES fellowship. He likes to be with people.
  • He is *Immanuel* -- God WITH you.
Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, "God with us." Mt 1.23

[Jesus says...] Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. Rev 3.20

Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.
John 14.23

[Jesus says...] For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Mt 18.20

Truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.
1 John 1.3b
Omnipresence
God is present everywhere [omnipresent].
[God said...] Am I a God near at hand, and not a God afar off? Can anyone hide himself in secret places, so I shall not see him? Do I not fill heaven and earth?" says the LORD. Jer 23.23-24

[Spoken to God...] Where shall I go from Your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from Your presence? If I go up into Heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the furthest parts of the sea; even there shall Your hand lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me. Ps 139.7-10

God is all-powerful [omnipotent]. He is Almighty.

  • This does NOT mean that God can do anything and everything. As examples: He cannot lie, break His promises, tempt or be tempted, or do anything else that is contrary to His nature and character.
  • Also, God cannot perform a "logical absurdity" such as *making a rock so big that He cannot lift it.*
The LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless." Gen 17.1b

Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
Mt 19.26

I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, "Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!"
Rev 19.6

God has self-control. He has power over His power. That is, God has the power of self-limitation.

  • For example, God limited Himself to some extent by giving free moral choices to people and angels.
  • The fact that God gave us free moral choices is consistent with the fact that He did not use His *POWER* to keep sin out of the universe, and He does not save anyone by force.
Example of God NOT using His power to force our moral choices
[God said...] I call Heaven and earth to record today against you. I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing. Therefore, choose life, so that both you and your seed may live, so that you may love the LORD your God, and that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him. Deu 30.19-20a

Example of God NOT using His power to immediately destroy sin and evil
[God said...] I will not carry out the heat of My anger. I will not return to destroy Ephraim. For I am God and not man, the Holy One in your midst; and I will not enter into the city. Hos 11.9

Omniscient
God is all-knowing [omniscient]. God knows the "What IF" -- that is, God knows all possible things, as well as all actual things.

God knows the future. He cannot ever be *surprised* by events that take place, or by decisions that His creatures make.

God knows the future from TWO standpoints:

  • 1- There are certain future events which will come to pass because God has ORDAINED them. One example is that you, as a believer in Christ, WILL go to heaven.
  • 2- There are certain future events that God has NOT ordained, but which God foreknows because He is omniscient. One example is what you will have for lunch next week. These are *free actions* -- they do not take place because they are foreseen by God, but they are foreseen BECAUSE they will take place.
  All-knowing
Great is our Lord, and mighty in power. His understanding is infinite.
Ps 147.5

For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.
1 John 3.20

And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him
[God] to whom we must give account. Heb 4.13

Knows all possible things as well as all actual things
Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "Thus says the LORD... if you do not surrender to the king of Babylon's princes, then this city shall be given into the hand of the Chaldeans"
Jer 38.17a, 38.18a
[Jesus said...] Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the powerful acts which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes! Mt 11.21

Knows future events
God said to Abram, You must surely know that your seed shall be a stranger in a land not theirs, and shall serve them. And they shall afflict them four hundred years. And also I will judge that nation whom they shall serve. And afterward they shall come out with great substance.
Gen 15.13-14

[God said...] I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand. Ex 3.19

Understands us perfectly
For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, You know it altogether.
Ps 139.4

But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men and did not need that anyone should testify of man. For He knew what was in man.
John 2.24-25

God is most wise...

  • God not only possesses ALL possible information, He also exercises perfect judgment in applying that information to real situations.
  • That is, God always chooses the best goals, and selects the perfect methods for attaining those goals.
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. Rom. 16.27

To the only wise God, our Savior, be glory and majesty and might and authority, even now and forever. Amen.
Jude 1.25
Holy
God is holy; absolutely pure. He is separate from sin, from His creation and from His creatures.

Go
HERE for a definition of "God's holiness."
Praise the LORD our God, and worship at His holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy. Ps 99.9

Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You only are holy.
Rev 15.4a

I am the LORD your God. You shall therefore consecrate yourselves, and you shall be holy; for I am holy.
Lev 11.44a

And one
[seraph] cried to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts. The whole earth is full of His glory!" Isa 6.3
